KHS recently finished a pair of fully custom-built cabinets and shelving units that frame both sides of a fireplace, turning the entire wall into a clean, functional focal point. Each side was crafted from scratch to fit the space perfectly, with adjustable bookcase shelves that let the homeowner tailor the layout for books, décor, or media. The cabinetry features matching hardware throughout, giving the whole setup a unified, intentional look that feels both high‑end and handcrafted. It’s the kind of project where the fit, finish, and small details do all the talking—classic KHS work. Call us if your home needs upgrades! ... See MoreSee Less

Thinking about a new composite deck? Should you install it during the winter?
Composite decking is an excellent material, however it has specific performance characteristics that change significantly in cold weather. For that reason, KHS generally chooses not to build composite decks during periods of sustained low temperatures unless a customer specifically requests it. This isn’t about convenience—it’s about protecting the integrity of the finished product and ensuring it meets the standard our customers expect.
Key Reasons To Avoid Cold‑Weather Composite Installation:
-Material brittleness increases, leading to a higher risk of chipping, cracking, or rough cuts.
-Board expansion and contraction become harder to predict, making proper spacing more difficult to achieve.
Installation specifications require:
1 mm gap when temperatures are above 80°F
3 mm gap when temperatures are between 40°F and 77°F
6 mm gap when temperatures are below 40°F
Insufficient spacing can lead to board warping, heaving, twisting, or long‑term structural distortion.
-Fasteners perform inconsistently in cold composite, which can compromise long‑term hold and stability.
-Human fatigue increases in cold conditions, overall fit and finish can suffer, as fine‑detail craftsmanship is harder to execute when materials and conditions are working against you.
-Long‑term performance may be reduced, as cold‑weather installation can introduce small imperfections that grow over time.
At KHS, our professional recommendation is to schedule composite projects during warmer weather, when the material behaves predictably and our team can deliver the level of craftsmanship we’re known for. By choosing the right conditions, we ensure every board seats properly, every joint aligns cleanly, and the finished deck reflects the quality our customers invest in.

Composite decking can fail—and we’ve seen it firsthand.
KHS recently rebuilt a composite deck that was constructed in 2014 that deteriorated prematurely due to poor installation methods and low quality composite materials. For the rebuild, our customer chose wood decking with hidden fasteners to reduce upfront costs and to keep future maintenance demands reduced, a quality composite railing.
The lesson: durability depends on material quality and proper installation. Lower-grade composites with high wood fiber and weak resins are vulnerable to moisture, rot, and UV damage. Choosing reputable, proven products ensures long-term performance.
At KHS, we use only trusted materials and apply meticulous construction practices that exceed code, delivering solid, beautiful decks built to last.
